Check the color before committing
A sample board lets you review the stain color before application. A test patch lets you see it directly on your floor. We use these checks to help you choose the shade before the rest of the floor is stained.
How we apply the stain
We apply stain with stain applicator pads, working in manageable sections and wiping off the excess with lint-free rags.
Pittsfield’s seasonal temperature range is roughly 68°F. We leave time for the stain to dry fully before applying the sealer and finish coats.

Refinishing cost
Hardwood floor refinishing costs $3 to $8 per square foot. That is the range for refinishing, not a separate price for stain application alone. Use the square footage of the floors you want refinished to calculate a preliminary budget.

Good to Know Before You Call
Oil-based or water-based polyurethane, which should I choose?
Oil-based ambers the wood, adds warmth, and is very durable but cures slowly and smells strong. Waterborne dries clear, keeps the wood's natural tone, has low odor, and cures faster so you're back on the floor sooner. Both are durable now; the choice is mostly color, smell, and how fast you need the room back.
How long before I can walk on and furnish the floors?
With waterborne finish you can usually walk in socks the next day and return light furniture in a couple of days. Oil-based needs longer. Either way the finish keeps hardening for a couple of weeks, so we advise waiting on rugs and heavy furniture until it has fully cured.
Can you change the color of my floors?
Yes, once the floor is sanded to bare wood we can stain it lighter or darker before the finish coats. Some species take stain more evenly than others; we always test the stain on your actual floor in an out-of-the-way spot so you approve the real color, not a sample board.
A Few More Questions
Do you fix gaps between boards?
Seasonal gaps that open in winter and close in summer are normal and we generally don't fill those hard, because filler will squeeze out when the boards swell back. Permanent gaps and cracks we fill during sanding so they sit flush and take finish evenly.
Can you match a repair to the rest of my existing floor?
For board replacement we source matching species and profile, weave the new boards into the field rather than blocking them off, then sand and finish the whole area together so the repair blends. An exact match on an old, ambered floor is hardest with brand-new wood, and we'll tell you honestly how close it will get.
What's hardwax oil and why would I pick it over polyurethane?
Hardwax oil penetrates the wood for a natural, low-sheen matte look and is easy to spot-repair without recoating the whole floor. Polyurethane sits on top as a harder film with more scratch and water resistance. Oil suits people who want a raw, matte feel and easy touch-ups; poly suits high-traffic and busy households.
Do I need to move out during the work?
Not usually. We work room by room where possible and the finishes we use are low enough odor that most families stay, keeping off the freshly coated areas. For a whole-house oil-based job, being away for the strongest cure days is more comfortable.
How often should hardwood floors be refinished?
A full sand-and-refinish is a once-a-decade-or-more event for most homes, over-sanding shortens a floor's life. A screen-and-recoat every few years in high-traffic homes refreshes the finish and delays the day a full refinish is needed, which is the cheaper way to protect the wood.
